Report: 1 In 4 Drivers Can’t Afford Major Repairs

Here’s some bad news for those of us who spend a lot of time behind the wheel: not only are drivers in the U.S. getting worse, but it appears that their cars are too. A recent study by the Automobile Association of America showed that the poor economy is forcing drivers to delay or avoid needed maintenance or car repair. One in four drivers, or 25 percent, could not afford “major” car repairs (over $2,000), and one in eight drivers, or 12.5 percent, couldn’t even afford a $1,000 repair.
If you’ve priced parts or repairs lately, you’ll realize that reaching these numbers isn’t difficult. A set of four tires for today’s larger wheels can easily exceed $1,000, and a complete brake job with new pads, rotors, and labor can even creep up on the $1,000 mark. If you need major engine or transmission work, it’s almost certain you’ll cross the $2,000 threshold, depending upon the vehicle you drive and the amount of labor involved in the repair. In some cases, extended warranties can help, but these often require you to prove that you’ve followed the vehicle’s maintenance schedule.
We’re spending less money on repairs and upkeep of our cars as well. In 2005, the average driver spent $181 annually on repairs and maintenance; in 2011, that number has fallen to $169, despite the fact that labor, parts, and material prices have gone up over the past six years.
Americans are keeping their cars longer, too, which isn’t necessarily a good thing if they’re avoiding maintenance or repairs. To avoid costly repairs in the future, the AAA advises drivers to stick to the maintenance schedule recommended by their manufacturer. A transmission fluid and filter change may seem expensive, but it’s quite a bit cheaper than having to replace your transmission due to neglect.

2012 BMW Z4 Exclusive Canyon Brown M Sport

Special edition trims are nothing new for BMW, but it’s still worth noting considering just how extensive the brand is, especially here in America.

With the 2012 BMW Z4, BMW is looking into raising the awareness and interest for their sports roadster. The company has decided to do away with their previous packages - the Exclusive Ivory White Leather Package being one of them - in lieu of introducing an all-new aesthetic package called the Exclusive Canyon Brown Package.

Available for the standard and the M Sport versions, the Exclusive Canyon Brown Package will feature plenty of new upgrades, including sport seats that come with an exclusive extended Merino leather upholstery with contrasting stitching. Meanwhile, the Z4’s upper dashboard is dressed in a Canyon Brown Oregon leather with contrasting stitching. The front lateral, center armrests, and the passenger-side dashboard come in black Nappa leather while the door handles come in black nappa leather and Fineline Antracite wood trim.

For the Exclusive Canyon Brown M Sport Package, BMW is including more options for the Z4, including an adaptive M suspension, a set of Canyon Brown Extended Merino leather sport seats, an M sports steering wheel with paddle shifters, a new aerodynamic kit, an anthracite headliner, increased top speed limiter, and a set of 18" performance tire upgrades.

As with all packages coming out of BMW, the new Exclusive Canyon Brown programs doesn’t come cheap. For the sDrive35i model, the package retails for $5,050. For the four-cylinder sDrive28i, it’ll cost you $5,350.

2012 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup

The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup - the most successful race car on earth - has been improved even further for the 2012 model year. This year’s model gets the added bonus of a 100-liter FT3 safety fuel tank which is filled via an opening in the front bonnet. This new tank will make the GT3 Cup an even stronger opponent for a number of endurance races.

The Porsche GT3 Cup is based on the lightweight 911 GT3 RS (997) street sports car and will feature the same six-cylinder engine, but will be combined with a race exhaust system with a controlled catalytic converter to keep emissions to a minimum. This setup will mean that the GT3 Cup will push out a total of 450 HP at 8,500 rpm.

The 911 will also receive light alloy rims measuring 9.5Jx18 with 25/64-18 Michelin race tires. The new wheels will be combined with blade-type anti-roll bars at the front and rear adjustable in seven positions and PCCB Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake that will reduce the car’s weight by around 44 lbs. The interior will receive a special racing steering wheel with the controls for the info display right on it.

The 2012 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup will be delivered to teams around the world from September and will be run in this specification for the 2012 and 2013 race seasons. It is priced at 161,750 Euro or about $234,000 at the current exchange rates.

2014 Lexus LF-A रोअद्स्टर

When Lexus unveiled the LF-A Roadster concept at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, everyone was hoping that the drop top version of the LF-A wouldn’t end there. Now, three years after the highlighted debut, the roadster model has finally been confirmed for production. Expect the Lexus LF-A Roadster to make its appearance in late 2014, only after all of the 500 coupes have been produced.

The design of the future drop top should remain parallel to that of the coupe with possible tweaking in the headlamps and a few other minor tricks. The biggest change will be the fabric soft top, waiting and willing to deliver a wind-in-your-hair experience. Under the hood, expect the same 4.8 liter V10 engine as found in the coupe version. This engine delivers a maximum output of 560 HP at 9,000 RPM and a peak torque of 354 lb-ft at 6,800 RPM. The sprint from 0 to 60 mph will still be made in under 4 seconds, while top speed will be kept in the 200 mph area. The only question remaining is if Lexus will also offer a Nurburgring package for the Roadster model.
